yesterday we saw the very moving site of the coffin of her late majesty queen elizabeth taking down the royal mile in edinburgh from the palace of hollywood house the historic residence of the king of scots to sungiles cathedral to lay in state for 24 hours in a very significant and moving gesture the ancient crown of scotland has been laid upon the head of her coffin by the keeper of the crown the duke of hamilton the crown of scotland is the oldest crown in great britain and is part of the scottish crown jewels which are known as the honours of scotland and are now kept in edinburgh castle it's an object of deep symbolism and an icon of scotland's self-determination and nationhood but it is also an object that has been the center of much controversy and has a rich history it is also of course a beautiful work of art and a fine example of the scottish goldsmith's craft from the early 16th century demonstrating that scotland was not a rustic backwater in the
